Educational Psychologist job in New Zealand

Position: Educational Psychologist
Industry: Special Education
Service: School & Early Childhood
Contract: Permanent Full Time
Location: New Zealand
Job #: 1

The key focus of these psychology jobs is for every child and young person to have access to learning opportunities that maximise their learning, promote social inclusion and facilitate smooth transition through to life-long learning.

Psychologists provide a range of assessment, intervention and training services, and establish effective relationships with parents, whanau/family, educators and others working in the community.  These roles are more than an assessment and report service as there is an emphasis in assessment, analysis and implementation of programmes.

Successful candidates would join multi-disciplinary teams of professionals that are passionate about achieving positive outcomes for learners with special education needs, and in particular, those with challenging behavioural needs, at both school and pre-school levels.

These jobs are ideally suited to psychologists seeking excellent career development support and who would enjoy a friendly and supportive work place environment.  The positions encourage a good work, family and professional development balance.

Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • An in-depth knowledge of human development, learning and behaviour, family and social systems, pedagogy, assessment, analysis and intervention frameworks, and planning and evaluation processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of inclusive education practices
  • The ability to work with students with complex disability needs and/or challenging behaviours
  • Knowledge of school and early childhood curriculum
  • An ability to plan and manage time effectively to meet goals and objectives
  • The ability and willingness to work cooperatively as a team member in a range of contexts
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • A current driver’s license

An advantage would be training in:

  • Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA)
  • The Incredible Years programme
  • Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

If interested then apply in order to receive a free evaluation. You don't have to be an active job seeker to apply.

Suitably matched applicants will receive information about the role, the employer and the locations, an estimate of likely salary and relocation costs.

Short-listed psychologists will receive guidance in making applications and interview preparation. Job alerts will then be forwarded as roles become available.

Expressions of interest are encouraged from both local and overseas psychologists.  New Zealand immigration visas would be available for qualifying overseas candidates and their families.

Case Study

Natalie is a clinical psychologist recruited from the UK. This is what she had to say.

Job hunting from halfway around the world proved no barrier. After two years working in forensic mental health services in the UK, she says New Zealand sounded like an ideal change.

"I wanted to move away from the hectic London lifestyle but was not yet ready to move home to Ireland. I applied for the job in Wellington before moving and was pleasantly surprised at how easy the process was. I was interviewed over the phone, then it was relatively straightforward to obtain visas and to register as a clinical psychologist in New Zealand,"

Natalie says her favourite part of the job is working therapeutically with a complex group of people. "I love the diversity of the role. I work with individuals in prison and the community; I have the opportunity to complete assessments, provide interventions, work on research projects, and supervise others."

Empathy, understanding and analytical skills are vital, along with the ability to step back and make clear decisions about how best to help each individual. "Working therapeutically with offenders requires patience, tolerance and a willingness to work with the person at their level and their pace."

My employer welcomes psychologists with clinical or forensic backgrounds and provides excellent working conditions and a clear career structure. "It is a progressive organisation that respects its psychologists. There's a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and psychologists play a key role in this," says Natalie.

As for her new home: "New Zealand is an easy place to move to and a great place to live, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. It's every bit as beautiful as it is made out to be."
