Case Study: Rob

Rob is a UK forensic psychologist we recruited. This is what he has to say:

Offender rehabilitation services in New Zealand are progressive and value their  psychologists.

"My experience of treatment, risk assessment and supervision from the UK all served me well in helping me adjust to deliver psychological services in New Zealand."

The rewards of the job are many and varied.

"An average week can find me seeing offenders in the community, offenders in the prison, supervising programme facilitators, completing parole board and court directed assessments, and contributing to national development projects."

"There's a strong professional identity for psychologists within New Zealand  justice services  and you have an opportunity to make a difference not only with offenders but other colleagues in both community and custodial settings.

The job is well supported in continuing professional development, career development and opportunity and in salary.”

And the transition - professionally and personally - has been smooth. "New Zealand is an amazing country both in terms of the people and the geography.

There are many cultural similarities to the UK so it is not a difficult country to fit into.

Technology now means that you can have face to face conversations with loved ones back home whenever you want.

One of the hardest things we face at the moment is which amazing New Zealand destination we will visit next.".

Rob's advice to others considering a similar move is: "Do it."
