Key Focus

To reduce reoffending and bring about positive change in offenders’ lives. 

Place of work:

Probation Officers are appointed to a generic role and the work is carried out in Courts, Prisons and Community Probation Centers.

Key Roles:

Assignment may initially be to a specific area of probation work, but with an expectation to rotate through the full range of duties over time.

These roles include;

  • Completing pre-sentence assessments in order to provide the court with relevant information to inform judges in their sentencing decisions;

  • Planning and managing community based sentences and orders, including supervision, community work, home detention, release from prison on conditions  and parole; 

  • Overseeing community work projects and placements;

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of  relationships with key stakeholders;

  • Building and maintaining relationships with the New Zealand Parole Board;

  • Contributing to a safe working environment.

  • Facilitating offender behaviour programmes

Probation Officers are expected to be capable of: Developing and maintaining excellent internal & external relationships & communication; Problem solving; Having the necessary technical knowledge; Demonstrating Skills in Self-Management & Planning; Being good at teamwork and supporting the values of the Organisation.

In addition Probation Officers may carry out specialist duties such as providing professional supervision to colleagues, facilitation of offender programmes, staff training, or prosecuting defended breaches and recalls.

Required skills & experience:

Prior experience as a Probation Officer which has provided the  the ability to demonstrate skills and experience in;

  •  Analysis, Problem-solving and Judgement

  •  Communication and Relationship Management skills

  •  Achievement Focus, Planning and organising

  •  Teamwork

  •  Adaptability and Resilience

  •  Openness and Willingness to Learn

  •  Written Communication skills

A current drivers’ licence.

Knowledge and experience of working in a culturally responsive framework is desirable.

Professional  Requirements:

A relative tertiary level qualification such as a Bachelor Degree in Community or Criminal Justice,  or a Bachelor Degree in Social Work or any other equivalent social science qualification.

Salary:

Salary range  NZD$42,604 to NZD$54,775

Note that overseas trained candidates regardless of previous experience will  be required to develop New Zealand specific competencies. You would therefore need to be prepared to start on a training salary of either NZD$42,604 or NZD$46,254.
