Key Focus:

To contribute to the successful resettlement of refugees in New Zealand by supporting to develop, implement and evaluate high quality mental health assessment and intervention programmes.  In addition, to provide services to asylum seekers.

Our client provides assessment and mental health services for all United Nations Quota Refugees entering the country. The multidisciplinary team directly assists refugees who have experienced torture or trauma and also addresses the mental health needs of asylum seekers. The work is highly interesting, challenging and very rewarding for those capable of working in a diverse multi-cultural setting.

Key Role:

The Psychologist will provide individual, group and some family work with refugees. The appointee will also provide direct psychological services for Asylum Seekers and consultation and advice into programs and initiatives. The organisation utilises the services of 80 interpreters in 27 languages.

Place of Work:

South  Auckland.

Required skills & experience:

  • You will be experienced in a range of assessment and interventions, particularly with traumatised people. 

  •  You will have a strong base of experience in trans-cultural psychology and ideally experience of working with interpreters.

  • You will be an excellent counsellor and highly motivated  and passionate about working with refugees.

  • You will have a broad range of experience in New Zealand and/or overseas in settings which have involved cross-cultural  expertise.  

  •  You will be able to formulate and deliver effective and culturally  responsive services which lead to mprovement for clients and families. 

  •  You will be able to work with both adults, adolescents and children.

  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse  clients is an advantage as is experience of working with interpreters.

  • In addition to direct clinical work, you will be an integral part of training for workforce development in building capacity in the mainstream.

  • As this position  is primarily working with men and boys in the clinical setting, gender matching is  a cultural matter which must be considered in this particular appointment. 

Professional  Requirements:

Registration or eligibility for registration the New Zealand Psychologists Board.
