Key Focus:

To provide forensic mental health services to meet the needs of mentally ill persons who have, or are at risk of, involvement with the criminal justice system through a Community Forensic Outreach Service and a Court Liaison Service. 

Key Role:

 

 

 

The roles will have either a primary Court Liaison focus or a primary Community Forensic Outreach focus with capacity to develop a secondary focus in the alternative program, depending on skills and personal preferences.

  • The Community Forensic Outreach Service is a consultation liaison service that assists mental health services to enhance their capacity to provide effective and safe community management of patients with forensic issues.

  • Clinicians provide a range of specialist risk assessments, advice and training as well as playing a key role with the District Forensic Liaison Network.

  • The Community Forensic Outreach Service works closely with the other forensic program areas such as Prison Mental Health Service, High Secure Inpatient Service and the Court Liaison Service to facilitate continuity of care for patients transitioning between programs, mental health services, or the criminal justice system.

  • The Court Liaison Service provides mental health screening and diversion for people appearing before the magistrates’ court or detained in the local watch-house. 

  • The purpose of this service is the early identification of people with a mental illness to ensure that appropriate mental health treatment, advice or referral is made.

  • The court liaison clinician also provides advice, support and training to court and watch house staff on mental health issues.

Place of Work:

The positions are based in Brisbane but provide services across the Central and Southern Heath Service Areas of Queensland.

Required skills & experience:

  • The possession of a current driver’s license to operate a “C” class motor vehicle

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the assessment of mental state and risk.  Experience in working with clients who have complex mental health issues.

  • Ability to work effectively and autonomously as a member of a multidisciplinary team, with the capacity to develop skills in consultation and liaison.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide training and/or capacity to develop skills and knowledge required to give presentations to mental health staff and staff from other agencies.

  • A commitment towards ongoing professional development and quality improvement, including involvement in activities such as research and service improvement activities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and legislation (specifically MHA 2000) impacting on the provision of forensic mental health care to clients with complex needs.

  • Knowledge or an ability to acquire knowledge of procedures, policies, regulations and standards which impact upon the position, in particular Public Sector guidelines and contemporary human resource management issues such as workplace health & safety, employment equity, ethical behaviour and anti-discrimination.

Professional  Requirements:

Full Registration with the Queensland Psychologist’s Registration Board.  Ideally applicants will possess an Australian Psychological Society (APS) recognised postgraduate qualification in clinical psychology and/or membership with the APS clinical division.

Salary:

Australian Dollars $59,298 - $64,688 pa
